Integrative Practices
Methods for integration of the body, mind and spirit provide significant alleviation of human suffering. Inner transformation for the individual contributes to the advancement of the collective human consciousness. Processors and Trainers featured here include a wide range of people helpers; counselors, therapists, healing arts professionals, energy and bodywork practitioners, life, healing and career coaches as well as individuals sharing in the spirit of community. As "Holistic" becomes a household word, we too come to the greater understanding that you cannot separate the individual from the environment, whether that relationship is microcosm or macrocosm. As we acknowledge the impact of subtle energies and embrace quantum physics, it becomes more critical that the well being of the whole person be considered. Energy Medicine and Energy Therapy have emerged as the knowledge of the East and that of the West have bridged to address the Body, Mind, Spirit. There is no physical illness that does not also have an emotional response accompanying it. The inner life affects the outer life.
The 1999 US Surgeon General's report on Mental Health states: "The Mind and Body are Inseparable." Considering health and illness as points along a continuum helps one appreciate that neither state exists in pure isolation from the other. In another but related context, everyday language tends to encourage a misperception that "mental health" or "mental illness" is unrelated to "physical health" or "physical illness." In fact, the two are inseparable.
Seventeenth-century philosopher Rene Descartes conceptualized the distinction between the mind and the body. He viewed the "mind" as completely separable from the "body" (or "matter" in general). The mind (and spirit) was seen as the concern of organized religion, whereas the body was seen as the concern of physicians (Eisendrath & Feder, in press). This partitioning ushered in a separation between so-called "mental" and "physical" health, despite advances in the 20th century that proved the interrelationships between mental and physical health (Cohen & Herbert, 1996; Baum & Posluszny, 1999)."
The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (CAHCIM) defines Integrative Medicine thusly: "Integrative Medicine is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing."
Increasingly we are witness to an expansion of our definition of well-ness, health and happiness as a more holistic approach emerges globally. Energy focus therapies utilize stimulation of acupoints, guided imagery and language protocols. Those familiar with meridian therapy and bioenergy modalities will find PEAT to also be a powerful and effective method. These methods are complementary to other modalities of professional treatment and self help and are not intended as replacement.
